I know that sometimes worksheets in the classroom can get a bad wrap. Sometimes worksheets are used as time fillers and don’t have much of a purpose. But personally, I love worksheets, especially for math. At my school, we don’t get a lot of prep time. So having something quick and easy to print out helps me leave school at contract hours. When worksheets are used right, they can provide the practice students need on certain concepts. I love to use worksheets as independent practice, assessment tools, and center activities. Today I am sharing my list of my favorite math for second graders worksheets.

Math for Second Graders Worksheets

Hundreds Chart

In second grade, one strategy students use to solve 2 digit addition and subtraction equations is to use a hundreds chart. In first grade, they got a lot of exposure to a hundreds chart, but I have found that my students need a quick refresher.

I have different hundreds chart worksheets that have some of the numbers missing. Students have to use patterns to fill in the missing numbers. By helping students find these patterns, it helps set them up for success for adding and subtracting on a hundreds chart.

For the worksheets I use for adding and subtracting on a hundreds chart, I have plenty of hundreds charts available on the worksheets. If students are just working on one hundreds chart while doing multiple math problems they can get confused with all the pencil lines on the chart.

Break Apart

Break apart is another strategy we teach students in 2nd grade for 2 digit addition and subtraction. This strategy can be a little tricky at first for students, but after some practice, it always turns out to be a favorite. The key to helping students have success with this strategy is to have worksheets with boxes on them. It helps students write the numbers broken apart so they can easily add or subtract when needed.

Number Line

For the number line strategy, students make jumps of 10s and 1s to get to the answer. Having numbers ready on a worksheet is helpful for students. I also have my students do other activities with number lines to help them understand this strategy. For example, one worksheet has pictures of equations already solved on a number line and students have to write the equation that matches the number line. Another has the jumps already there for students, they just need to write the numbers underneath.

Regrouping

For students to be fluently adding and subtracting numbers then teaching them how to regroup is a good way to go. I like to teach this in a way that uses number sense rather than just having kids memorize rote rules.

To do this, I have worksheets that have boxes where students draw the pictures of the numbers. The pictures represent base ten blocks. This helps students see if they need to regroup or not. Once students get practice with drawing the pictures, they see patterns. Soon they know what to do without the pictures.

On my worksheets I include charts that help students line up the numbers according to place value. I also put boxes where students can put their regrouped numbers. These boxes help remind students to always check if they need to regroup or not.

Fun Math Worksheets for Second Graders

For math fact practice in our classroom, I like to have my students do fun worksheets. These are math for second grade worksheets that incorporate some kind of game as students are solving the facts.

The first one I have my students do are math fact riddles. Students solve the math facts and then use the key to learn some sort of fun fact. The worksheets have a clipart picture on them and the fact as something to do with the object in the picture. This really peaks my students’ interest. It motivates them to solve the math facts so they can learn the facts.

Whenever I give these to my students they always ask if I have extras that they can take home and do. Find these math fact riddles here.

Another favorite of my students is my I Spy Math Facts Worksheets. These have math facts hidden in the clipart and students have to find the facts that add up to be a certain number. For all the other facts they find, students flip over the page and write the equation with the answer. Students have a blast doing these! Plus, they love to color the clipart afterwards. Find these I Spy Math Facts Worksheets here.

As I am on the subject of math fact practice, students do best when they get strategy practice as well. Don’t worry, I also have worksheets for students to get this practice! Whether it’s the near doubles strategies, the counting on strategy, or the make ten strategy, I have worksheets for all of those. I even have anchor charts for each strategy to help students as they are doing the worksheets. Find these worksheets in this bundle here.
