Stressing out about making a meet the teacher night flyer? That’s how I felt my first year teaching. Meet the Teacher Night and the first day of school was approaching quickly. There was so much to do and I was feeling behind. Looking for help, I went to other team members to see what they did for a meet the teacher handout.

Teachers showed me complicated flip books that required lots of cutting and stapling. This left me thinking, “When am I going to find the time to put these all together?” I wanted a simpler option. So I decided to make a Meet the Teacher Night Brochure.

Make your meet the teacher flyer more effective with these 9 sections.

It was easy to keep the template on my computer, just tweak a few things each year, and have a quick way to be prepared, ready, and confident for Meet the Teacher Night.

These were easy to put together because all I had to do was print and make 2 folds. I could handle that! It took away some of the stress that comes at the beginning of the school year.

Another thing that helped was having a Back to School Checklist that I could use each year. I didn’t have to come up with new ideas or use all my brain power trying to figure out what to do. I’ve compiled my Back to School Checklist and First Week of School Plans in a free resource! Grab your free copy here.

Why I Use a Meet the Teacher Flyer (Instead of a Flip Book)

Now you might be thinking that a meet teacher night brochure sounds like a good idea. But maybe you’re unsure of the information to include. It helps me to break the meet the teacher flyer into 9 sections. Do one section at a time. And remember once you get them written out the first time, you can use it again and again for years to come!

When teaching about a meet the teacher night flyer, consider a brochure style instead of a flip book. You’ll save so much time skipping the cutting and stapling!

So what sections are included in this template? Well, let’s get into the 9 must-have sections for a perfect meet the teacher flyer.

Meet the Teacher Handout

Wondering what to include on your meet the teacher handout. I’m breaking down the 9 sections I include to effectively share information to parents.

  1. Cover Page: Of course you need a cover page so that parents know what they are looking at and holding. I like to keep it simple and straightforward. My meet the teacher flyer cover says “Welcome to Second Grade.” It has a cute image of a globe. Then at the bottom it has my name. That way parents can see the grade and the name of the teacher easier. Parents are then ready to open the brochure and read more about our class.

  1. Introduction: The title to this one is “Hello There.” I express my excitement for the upcoming school year and being their child’s teacher. You can include some personal info here like how long you have been teaching and your credentials. I then share how this pamphlet will outline important information for our class.  Set the expectation that parents knowing this information will help the school year run more smoothly.

  1. Birthdays: This section is important because it helps parents know what to expect for how to celebrate birthdays in your class. Do you have parents send treats with their child? If so, how many do they need to send? What about students whose birthday is in the summer? This is all good information to include in this section.

4. Curriculum: This is a section that outlines the main curriculums you will follow for the year. I keep it simple by including their names and the main units. I also share what testing looks like for these curriculums. Are there weekly tests or unit tests? These are important things for parents to know.

When you use a meet the teacher brochure template, you can reuse the info in it year after year. Save you so much time and energy!

  1. Homework: Outline how you do homework in your classroom. Do you send home the homework that goes with your curriculums or do you have students complete those in class? Or maybe you have a reading log for students. How does that look? What do parents need to do?  When do parents need to help their child turn those in?

  1. Take Home Binder: How will you send back papers for parents to look over? Do you use a binder for a folder? Are students supposed to take these home each day and return them each day? Or do they just take them home once a week? These are all important questions to answer in this section.

Also include what it looks like when you need students to return a paper from home. I split my students’ Take Home Binder into different sections. There are 4 sections for students to organize the papers going home: Keep at Home, Bring Back to School, Homework, and Newsletter. I outline these sections for parents to learn more about them. It’s also important to include a reminder to have parents check these binders daily and to empty them out.

  1. Classroom Management: This is a great place to include your class rules and how you do rewards and consequences. Keep it simple and sweet. I include my 3 class rules: be respectful, responsible, and ready. Then I share more about how students can work together to earn rewards as a class with our Whole Class Rewards System. I also include info about individual rewards and consequences.

  1. Specials: Share what specials your class will be going to in the year plus your schedule for each specials class. Parents like to know what day P.E. is so they can send their child to school with good shoes. They also want to know what day Library is so that they can help remind their child to return their books.

  1. Parent Communication: How will you communicate to parents throughout the school year? Share how often you send home a newsletter. Is it weekly or monthly? Also share how it is best for parents to get in contact with you. Do you prefer email? Or maybe you have a class messaging app like ClassDojo that you use. Make sure to include your contact info in this section.

Those are the sections I include in my Meet the Teacher Brochure. It helps parents digest important information about your class in a manageable way. The sections are short and sweet so parents can quickly read and know what to expect for the new school year.

But how do I give students these brochures?

I leave one at each students’ desk for Meet the teacher Night. I also have their child’s name tag on their desk along with a little gift. When students and parents come in, I have a checklist projected up on my whiteboard. It gives them instructions to help them find their child’s desk, read through the pamphlet, and to fill out the forms.
