Celebrate the winter season in your classroom with fun math activities! These math activities don’t have to be complicated for students to get the math practice they need. They can be simple but fun! Today I’m sharing 5 math activities perfect for the winter season. And they are perfect for 1st and 2nd grade classrooms.
But before we get started, did you know it is my passion to help teachers teach math facts in a fun, yet meaningful way. A way that helps students understand the basic facts, rather than using rote memorization. I have a free workbook for 1st and 2nd grade teachers to help get you started.

Math Activities for 2nd Grade
Snowflake Math Fact Craft
Hanging up some decorations in your classroom can get students so excited about the project. Add in some math facts and students are instantly engaged! I have my 2nd grade students make a Snowflake Math Fact Craft. They solve the math facts, cut out the squares, and then glue them on the snowflake outline.
I also tailor the facts to students’ needs. If students are working on facts 1-10, I can give them facts to match that. If a student is working on subtraction facts 1-20, I can give them facts to match that.
As students work on the level they are at, it makes this math activity even more engaging. Find the differentiated Snowflake Math Fact Craft to use in your classroom here.
I Spy Math Facts Worksheets
Now sometimes in the classroom, I am one tired teacher! And I just want something I can print off and give students. But oftentimes… Worksheets are boring to students and don’t keep them on task.
That is why I created I Spy Math Facts Worksheets. They are no prep for me but super engaging for my 2nd grade students!
Each page has them searching for a certain kind of fact. For example, they could be looking for facts that make 10. I have them highlight all the facts that make ten and color the pictures.
For the facts that don’t make 10, I have them write those with the answers on a recording page. So they are getting lots of math fact practice!

Math Fact Riddles
Speaking of no prep math activities, Math Facts Riddles are a great one! All you have to print out. I have riddles giving a fact about snowflakes, snowmen, and penguins. Making it so fun for the winter season!
You can set these out as an early finisher activity or a math center. But they are great for a whole group math activity as well!

Don’t Eat Pete
This is another simple math fact game that students love! Best part about it, you only have to print off the playing board.
Students work in small groups and put a “marker” on each square. They choose a player to leave as the rest choose a square to be “Pete.”
When ready, they call the one player back. That player picks up the “markers” as they say the answer to the math facts.
If the student picks up the marker off of the “Pete” square, the rest of the players say “Don’t Eat Pete!”
Then it is another players turn.
I also love to differentiate with this game. If I know a group of students need to work on subtraction, I give them a subtraction playing board.
If students need help learning doubles facts, I give them a doubles facts playing board. Speaking of doubles facts, want to know the best way to teach them to students? Find out here in this blog post here.
