Winter break is coming up, and I like to get my whole week after winter break planned out and prepared for. One activity that I love to have my students do is winter break writing. It is a great opportunity to get students excited about writing a narrative. It’s easier for students because they just experienced winter break. It’s fresh in their memory.

So I’m sharing 3 winter break writing activities you can do with your students. These writing activities are great for 1st grade, 2nd grade, and 3rd grade. So let’s dive in.

Winter Break Writing

Winter Break Writing Bulletin Board

First, get your students excited by telling them their work is going to go up on a new bulletin board. Students write about their winter break activities on a mitten. They color the top of the mitten and cut it out. Then you staple them all up on a bulletin board with the words “WINTER BREAK WAS GREAT” and add up a cute banner.

Display this winter break writing project up on a bulletin board or your classroom door.

This winter break writing craftivity is nice because there are different versions included. Students can write a paragraph on the version with lines. Or students can finish the sentences to write about their winter break. Either way gets students writing and they make the cutest winter  bulletin board ever! Winter Break Memory Book Pages

Maybe putting up a new bulletin board isn’t quite your jam. And that’s okay! There is another option for you that will save you time. Maybe you are having your students create a memory book this school year. You can add in some of these writing activities there.

These memory book pages are similar to the mittens I talked about with the bulletin board. Students can write a paragraph on the version with lines, or they can finish the sentences.

Want a winter vacation creative writing project? Have students write what they did during winter break and display it up on their memory books.

I’ve even added in one more page that has transition words already there for students. They have to write about first what they did on winter break, next what did they do, and last what did they do during winter break. There are boxes for students to draw pictures of each thing they wrote about. Find these here.

Step By Step Guide to Writing a Paragraph About Winter Break

Maybe you want your students to write a paragraph about winter break but you know your students will need some support. I like to break it down into steps. First, I have students brainstorm. They think of 5 things they did over winter break and record them down on a page. They choose 3 of those ideas and write them as their 3 detail sentences. Then they write their introduction and conclusion. They put everything together in order in their rough draft. I read it through with them as we make editing marks. Then they are ready for their final draft.

Make the final draft of your students’ winter break project look nice by stapling a piece of construction paper to the back.

I like to staple the final draft onto a piece of construction paper to make a nice frame around it. Then I hang them up in the hallway. Find these step by step worksheets here.

Getting students to write about winter break is fun. I hope you can see yourself using these 3 writing ideas for winter break in your classroom. Find this resource to do so here.
